3M has named Gitanjali Rao from Lone Tree, CO, the winner of its 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

The 10th-annual contest, a partnership between 3M and Discovery Education, called for students in grades 5-8 to submit a two-minute video demonstrating an innovation that could provide a solution to an everyday problem. A panel of judges then selected 10 finalists who will then be paired with a 3M scientist to create an invention that solves the problem they identified.

Rao developed a mobile app to test water safety. As the winning entry, she will receive US$25,000 along with the opportunity to attend the taping of a Discovery Network TV show.
