California Janitors March for Sexual Harassment Prevention Law

More than 100 San Francisco, CA, janitors who have survived rape will be arriving in Sacramento, CA, tomorrow following a four-day march in support of a new law that would strengthen sexual harassment and violence prevention, SF Weekly reports.

The janitors are trekking in support of Assembly Bill 2079, which would require employers to prove they have completed sexual harassment training under the guidance of an advisory committee. The bill, which is currently awaiting California Governor Jerry Brown’s signature, also would require peer-training to assist immigrant women in educating each other on the risks of working as janitors on the night shift. Community and union advocates say many immigrant women neglect to report incidents of harassment and violence due to fear of deportation.

The march kicked off Monday with a rally at San Francisco City Hall attended by union organizers and service workers.
