U.K. Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced the country will ban the use of plastic straws, effective April 2020.

The ban will also apply to plastic drink stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds. According to a recent study, the country uses an estimated 4.7 billion plastic straws per year, Facilities Management Journal reports. The ban follows a recent governmental survey which found 80% of respondents in favor of banning plastic straws and 90% favoring banning plastic drink stirrers.
