The California Department of Public Health has issued more alerts for lead in candy than for any other source of foodborne contamination, according to a study that analyzed the results of a state law mandating food testing.
Since the law was implemented in 2006, 42 percent of the food contamination alerts issued by state health officials were for lead in candy. This was more than all of the alerts for food contaminated with salmonella, E. coli and botulism combined, Infection Control Today reported. Most of the contaminated candy came from Mexico, China, and India.
