Schools throughout The University of Wisconsin (UW) system are seeking US$78 million in additional funding from the state to increase its custodial and other workers’ salaries to help curb worker attrition rates.

The state is looking to provide $29.6 million to UW for staff pay increases, less than half of the desired sum. The wage increase is being requested because many employees are leaving the university to work for other institutions where the pay is better, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. In addition, UW says its staff deserves the pay upgrade and that its personnel are its top concern. The proposed increase would affect the 2017-19 state budget.
