The cleaning products industry supports 64,000 U.S. jobs and includes US$8.3 billion of labor compensation, for a direct impact of more than $59 billion on the U.S. economy, according to a report from the American Cleaning Institute.

The report was prepared by the Manufacturing Institute’s Center for Manufacturing Research using economic data from 2016. It found approximately 53 percent of total cleaning product sales are from purchases by other industries. When suppliers and distributors are factored in, the cleaning products industry has a total economic impact of $192 billion in output and encompasses more than 756,000 jobs.

The report examined the industry’s trade volumes, which have expanded since the late 1990s. Exports increased from $4.7 billion in 1998 to $12.5 billion in 2014.

The report also tracked labor productivity growth, which experienced a high of 85, 500 jobs in 1998 and a low of 60,600 in 2009. Employment has increased since 2009, reaching 66,300 in 2015 and finishing off 2016 at 64,800 jobs.
