Washington, DC, has become the first city in the world to reach the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum status.

Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser received the honor during an event on the steps of the city’s Dunbar High School, which is the highest rated LEED-certified school in the United States, Architectural Digest reports. As the nation’s capital, Washington, DC. has an obligation to lead the rest of the country on environmental issues, Bowser said. As a result, government buildings in the city operates on 100 percent renewable energy and more than half of the city’s residents walk, bike, or take a public bus to work.
