The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a list of what it deems are the 12 “priority pathogens” posing the greatest threat to human health.
The organization’s index–the first of its kind–outlines 12 strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in an effort to increase awareness and spur research and development for new treatments, CNN reports.
According to the WHO’s list, which was developed in collaboration with the University of Tubingen in Germany, health care-acquired infections Acinetobacter baumannii and pseudomonas aeruginosa are the most deadly due to their resistance against multiple antibiotics. The WHO’s list also includes such bacteria as E. coli and salmonella.
