Hundreds of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1 members in Detroit, MI, voted to strike unless a new contract can be approved by next week.

The union represents more than 1,700 janitors and custodial workers who clean and maintain facilities across downtown Detroit. The workers are seeking a three-year contract with a guaranteed hourly wage of at least US$15.00 and union rights for security officers, airport workers, and other facility management professionals, Detroit Metro Times reports. The janitors’ current contract, which expires July 31, calls for an hourly wage of $9.45.
